Feathers in general represent a strong symbol in Native American culture, especially the eagle feather.
There are many reasons why the eagle feather is very important to the Native American people. Here are the top 4 roles the eagle feather plays in the lives of Native Americans.
Role 1 – Prayer
The eagle is known to be the messenger to the creator. It flies the highest in the sky and is therefore closest to the creator. During prayer, the eagle feather is used to capture the attention of the creator and focus the message that is being delivered.
Role 2 – Gifts
The eagle feather is often used as a very special and honorable gift. To receive an eagle feather as a gift one has to do a brave or respected act, which means the feathers have to be burned.
The eagle feather represents all seven grandfather teachings. So, if a feather is used as a gift, it attracts the attention of the creator.
Role 3 – Ceremonies
The eagle feather is used in ceremonies for healing or purification purposes. The goal of using the feather is to achieve a certain mindset to understand your own visions. Using the eagle feather in prayer allows one to have the strongest communication with the creator.
Role 4 – Regalia
The eagle feather is used in many traditional regalias. A regalia is what a Native American dancer wears during traditional dances, such as a powwow. Eagle feathers are worn during many of these dances, such as the grass dance, jingle dance, and the men’s and woman’s traditional. The dancers must earn the feathers they wear, showing pride and honor to the creator.
Many dancers attach the feathers to their hair, while others hold it in their hand and raise it up high towards the creator. This shows a thankful spirit towards the creator for allowing them to own the eagle feather.
